About Laptop
Computers and Notebook Computers - Is There A Difference?

Laptops are mobile personal
computers that weigh significantly
less than 10 lbs. Much more
capable and convenient than
some of the most popular
desktop computers today,
laptops have developed from
specialized usage to the
choice for all-around computing
needs. The development of
LCD (liquid crystal display)
technology provided the
means for creating thin
and clear flat panel displays
in a compact computer. They
can easily be combined with
projectors to offer group
viewing of PowerPoint presentations,
for example.
The term laptop computer
and notebook computer are
used interchangeably today.
During earlier evolutionary
years of the technology's
development, the term 'notebook'
was often applied to the
lightest weight and smallest
units being created, but
the units and terminology
are now virtually the same.
However, a new category
has developed of "ultra-light
laptops" that pack as much
performance as possible
into a small package, providing
users with a screen size
of 12" diagonal or less.

Unlike desktop
computers
which offer
you the
flexibility
of "changing
out" your
monitor
for any
reason,
your laptop's
screen is
a critical
part of
your computing
needs.
Laptop displays
are designed
using LCD,
Liquid Crystal
Display,
technology.
The design
calls for
thin "sandwiches"
of glass
containing
liquid-crystal
filled cells
(red, green
and blue
cells on
color monitors
) that then
make up
a pixel.
Each pixel
(short for
Picture
Element)
is a single
point of
the total
picture
and they
are arranged
in rows
and columns
so close
they seem
connected.
The number
of pixels
a monitor
can display
will vary
by machine
and affect
the resolution,
clarity
and brightness.
One model
of Apple
PowerBook,
for example,
boast a
display
with over
1.7 million
pixels.
Arrays of
TFTs (thin
film transistors)
provide
the voltage
that cause
the crystals
to untwist
and realign
so that
varying
amounts
of light
can shine
through
and create
images.
This particular
sensitivity
to light
makes projection
equipment
(such as
LCD front
projectors)
a perfect
usage for
LCD technology
also because
of how it
focuses
light through
LCD chips.
There are
five layers
to an LCD
display:
a backlight,
polarized
glass sheet,
colored
pixel layering,
coating
of liquid
crystal
solution
that responds
to signals
off a wired
grid of
x and y
coordinates,
followed
by a second
glass sheet.
To create
an image,
electrical
charges,
precision
coordinated
in various
degrees
and volts,
effect the
orientation
of the liquid
crystals,
opening
and closing
them and
changing
the amount
of light
that passes
through
specific
colors of
pixels.
LCD technology
has increased
its accuracy,
thanks to
advances
such as
thin film
transistors
(TFTs, also
known as
active-matrix
technologies)
that can
produce
sharp and
more accurate
color images
than earlier
technologies.
Take care
with your
LCD screen.
Unlike CRT
monitors
which use
a thicker
glass screen,
the LCD
screen is
very sensitive
to touch
and should
not be pressed.
The pixels
may be irreparably
damaged
making it
impossible
for images
in that
section
of your
screen to
be viewed.

The portability
and light
weight of
laptops
allow them
to be used
for traveling
as well
as desktop
computing.
The advent
of wireless
internet
connection
offers users
functional
convenience
just able
wherever
they're
located.
Enabling
even greater
access and
convenience,

well as

environments.
